Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for posting on Liberty Post?

1: No content that is disrespectful of a group of people based on their race or religion is permitted. This does not mean that religions themselves must be respected, as the various faiths are open to scrutiny so long as those who practice a given faith that is criticized are not the subject of the criticism.

2: No disclosure of personal information not already in the public domain. This includes items such as true names, phone numbers, email addresses occupations, employers and so forth of LP members. Exceptions are for such information voluntarily disclosed on this or other forums by the subject.

3: Civility is to be observed. Excessive hostilities, name calling and claims that are libel or potentially libel are not permitted.

4: Excessive vulgarity and pornographic images are not permitted. Content that is less "family friendly" should be placed in the Biker Bar, though there are still lower limits in that section.

5: No gruesome images of dead or dying people shall be posted. "Gruesome" is defined as any image that can't reasonably be staged by healthy people. Gruesome images or content that might be of legitimate debate value should be linked with appropriate warnings.

6: Content must be coherant and convey meaningful ideas.

7: Only one screen name per person is permitted. Exceptions are by consent of LP management. Name changes are permitted provided LP management is informed.

8: Due to abuse, no LP accounts can be registered with a free web mail email address, or any domain that offers free or trial web mail. Exceptions are made by LP management. Any accounts discovered with free web mail address (registered after January 1, 2004) may be retired until an alternate address is provided.

9: Subscription Ping Lists should be used only to bring attention to items of particular subject interest, and not for the purpose of attacking, ridiculing or bringing hostile attention to particular posters.

10: Proxy posting of commentary of sanctioned posters to circumvent a sanction is not permitted.

11: Headlines of articles posted on LP must be the same as reflected on the source web site. Exception: Clarifications in the title are permitted as addendums provided that they are not editorials on the title, such as providing the location of a news event. Such clarifications should be enclosed in brackets or parentheses.

12: Articles posted should not contain any commentary by the person posting the article. Any such comments should follow as an ordinary comment.

13: Only articles reporting events within the last 48 hours are to be posted in "Breaking News", and only articles reasonably free of commentary should be posted there. LP management has sole discretion over fitness for Breaking News posting.

What are the penalties for violating the various rules?

They vary from a warning, limited posting status (probation), temporary suspension to banning. In general, we prefer to administer the lightest penalty that we expect will reasonably get the message to the offender of proper posting protocol.

How do I sign in?

The first time you go to post an article or comment, the site will check to see if you have yet signed in. If you have not, you'll be directed to a "sign in" screen where you may enter your screen name and password. After you sign in, you'll be able to continue on to post your article or comment.

How do I register to become a member of Liberty Post?

To register, visit the Register page and enter the requested information. All fields must be completed. After you do so, the system will generate a confirmation code and email it to the address you provided. If you've entered your email address correctly, you should receive that email within a couple minutes.

When you receive the email, it will contain a single instruction for confirming your account. Once you complete that task (with a single mouse click) your account will then be confirmed.

I registered a screen name but didn't get any confimation email. Why not?

The confirmation email is sent immediately, but it may take several minutes or possibly even an hour or two, depending on your internet connection. If you still do not receive the email, it may be because you misentered your email address. If so, your email would have been returned to us as undeliverabele. Whatever the reason, please email us and we'll let you know what's going on. Remember, if you did not enter your address in correctly, we have no way of contacting you.

I forgot my Password. Can you tell me what it is?

Your password is encrypted in a way that we can't tell what it is, but if you do forget your password, contact us and we can reset your password to something new.

I'm entering my Screen Name and Password but it's telling me it's not right. What do I do?

You're probably entering one of those incorrectly, but we're happy to assist. Just email us and let us know the problem and and we'll square you away.

Every time I sign in I'm told everything is fine, but when I click "continue", I'm asked to sign in again. What's wrong?

This means you are signing in properly, but that your web browser is not accepting or returning "cookies" as it should. Make sure your browser is set to accept cookies. Some users experiencing this problem have had it resolved after rebooting their computer. If it continues to be a problem, contact us.

How do I check to see if anyone has replied to one of my posts?

Just visit the "Latest Comments" page and enter your screen name (or just a unique part of it) into the "To" field and click the "Go" button. You'll receive a listing of only those posts that are directed to you, with the most recent post displayed first.

If you see messages posted to other screen names in the listing, Enter your entire screen name in the "To" field, check the "Exact Match" box and search again. That will give you a more refined search.

In the "Setup" page there is a Bozo Filter. What is that for?

As you post more and more on Liberty Post, you may frequently encounter personalities that you do not which to hear from. If so, you may enter those screen names into the Bozo Filter. After you do, you will no longer see their comments on the threads or on the Latest Comments page even if they ping you (address a post to you). You also won't articles posted by them on Breaking News or Latest Comments.

Persons you place in your "Bozo" list will not know you have done this unless you tell them.

In the "Setup" page there is also a Category Filter. What do I do with that?

The category filter is there to allow you to only see those articles and comments in topics that you are most interested in. If you decide to use the category filter, you will still see any comments in which you are pinged when you do a ping search.

On the Latest Comments page, I see "Subcription Pings"? What are they? Subscription pings are an easy way for LP members who are interested in a specific topic to be pinged whenever an article or comment of related interest is posted to the forum. The person who owns the Subscription Ping can simply ping the name of the Subscription, and then all those subscribed to that particular ping will see the post when they check for their personal comments just as if they were mentioned by individual name.

For example, if you subcribe to "Liberty Post News" (the official LP news subscription) you will automatically be brought to the attention of any postings made to that subscription name the next time you check your own pings.

You can choose to subscribe outright to any existing Ping list or you can see a listing of only those subscriptions to that list by using the menu on the Latest Comments Page.

How can I create a Subscription Ping list? On both the Latest Comments and Setup page, you'll find a link to Manage Subscription Pings. There you can both create and manage your own subscription pings, add co-owners (A co-owner is someone you authorize to activate the ping list), and even add members (responsible use is required -- do not add persons against their will).

On that page you can also modify your own subscription to other Pings created by others.

I've set up some filtering in my setup page and it works, but when I leave and come back, the filters don't work anymore. What's wrong? When you return to Liberty Post, you need to sign in before the filters can activate. Until you sign in, the web server won't know who you are or which filter belongs to you. For best results set your bookmark to go directly to the "Sign-in" page so you can sign in before you do anything else.

I just saw an article or comment that should not be on Liberty Post. What do I do?

First, please make sure it really is an inappropriate post. If there is something wrong we want to know about it, but we will not censor an article merely because it voices an unpopular view.

But any post that contains personal information about someone, excessive amounts of derogatory language or obscenity, blatent commercial advertising, or any other type of information or pictures you think are a problem should be reported to abuse@libertypost.org. Please remember to provide the web address where the operators of Liberty Post can see your concern. "Cutting and Pasting" the URL is usually the best way to do that. Please also include some brief description of what you see so we can quickly locate the text or picture in question.

When we receive your email we'll review the problem and make a decision as to how to proceed from there.

What is the official political stand of Liberty Post?

While the operators of Liberty Post have various political views, Liberty Post itself it politically neutral. Volunteers that help keep Liberty Post on-line may post their views from time to time, but their views should never be construed as that of Liberty Post itself. Liberty Post not only welcomes, but encourages responsible viewpoints from the whole political spectrum and the sharing of ideas and perspectives on contemporary matters facing our country and world.

Can I post anything I want?

The goal of Liberty Post is to facilitate meaningful, formatted, communication among participants. This means allowing the expression of constructive ideas from one person to many. Liberty Post will live up to its name by allowing the responsible sharing of views by each and every person.

However, "meaningful, formatted communication" is not possible in a free-for-all arena. We do insist that all posts be made responsibly. This means posts should be coherent and understandable to the common person. Posts should not be made which are principally intended to offend others or contain excessive profanity, overreaching vulgarity, or arbitrary disclosure of personal, private, or identifying information not already openly available in the public sector.

Any member routinely violating these rules OR otherwise engaging in a pattern of posting that shows clear intent to bring discord to this forum may receive a warning, be placed on probation (restricted posting privileges) or be temporarily or permanently banned.

It is not possible for LP to monitor all discussion, but we will take action on posts brought to our attention that violate these minimal standards. If you feel some violation of these standards exists on Liberty Post, please email the webmaster.

While we will work to ensure everyone plays fair, we will absolutely not censor any person for their political views. Whether you are a Conservative, Liberal, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Socialist, Communist, Monarchist, Anarchist or any other -ism, -crat, -an, or -ist, you will be permitted to present your political sentiments, so long as conduct standards are maintained.

Can I change the titles of articles that I post?

Generally speaking, titles should be exactly the same as they appear on the source web site. Modifications are permitted solely for the purpose of clarifying the meaning of the title, such as a location of an incident described by the title. In such cases, clarifications should be enclosed in parantheses or brackets "()" or "[]" enclosures and placed at the end of the title unless clarity requires placement inside the title. Should I give the complete URL to each article or is the source web site sufficient?

The exact web address should always be given so the article and title can be easily verified.

Should the "Ping" line be used for anything other than screen names?

The "ping" address line is to be used only for actual screen names or subscription Ping names. It should not be used for insulting or derrogatory purposes. All screen names (if more than one is given) needs to be separated by commas so the software will know where one screen name ends and the next one begins.

What kinds of racial discussions are permitted at Liberty Post?

We have no interest in being politically correct. We do have an interest in debating issues fairly, to include those issues that relate to various ethnic groups, but racial slurs need not be employed to debate ethnic issues. Liberty Post insists that all ethnic groups be given respect in all Liberty Post discussions.

What is the "Biker Bar" category for, and why does it have a "warning" message at the top?

The "Biker Bar" category was initially established for Free Republic topics which attracted a crowd of people that were predominantly interested in discussing only Free Republic. Later, because comments made there tended to be of high volume crowding out the comment listings, we began screening those comments from the "Latest Comments" page as it was deemed beneficial to the rest of the forum's topics (which we are most interested in promoting). Later still, because other topics not directly related to FR were emerging there, we renamed it to "Biker Bar", and added the "Caution" message and a reminder of our disclaimer, and adopted a reduced set of rules for that section.

A small amount of content within the "Biker Bar" section can be very insulting and abrasive. Many of the people posting there are already familiar with each other from times and places long before this forum existed. Some have unresolved questions and issues related to past events and other organizations, and that area has been set aside for them to discuss their particular issues. Since those issues generally have a very narrow base of interested members, it is set apart from the rest of the forum so that those interested in it can visit it, and those that are not can easily ignore it.

Do different rules apply in the Biker Bar area, compared to the rest of the site?

The posting restrictions are less enforced in the "Biker Bar" area in terms of respect. While the vast majority of posts made there are polite, you will occasionally find references there that are offensive in one form or another. While we regret such language and tone, Liberty Post also recognizes that there are issues many people sincerely wish to discuss and the dispositions of some of these people with regard to these issues make attempts at "moderating" these subjects quite expensive in terms of our limited human resources.

Still, rules against personal information disclosure, threats, spamming, intent to bring harm to the forum itself and so forth still apply just as strongly in the Biker Bar as the rest of the site. As the name implies (with apologies to upstanding bikers everywhere) venturing into the Biker Bar should be done with an expectation of witnessing some rough attitudes. Those that are easily offended are advised to stay clear of it and remain in the other sections of the web site. The "Latest Comments" page will not show Biker Bar comments unless you search for messages sent to/from someone.

Also, the Biker Bar section should be given particular scrutiny with regard to factual claims. While you should always verify stories and claims made on Liberty Post with reliable outside sources, this is particularly true with claims made in the Biker Bar section.

How is Liberty Post organized? Is it a 501(c)(3)?

Liberty Post is not, and will never be organized under 501(c)(3) or any other alphanumeric government law. Liberty Post is simply a private association that retains its right to exist and function under the protection of First Amendment of the United States Constitution and similar provisions within the constitutions of the several states.

Do I have to register to use Liberty Post?

Registration is not required to visit Liberty Post. All articles and comments will remain freely available to all visitors whether registered or not. However, registration is required for anyone that wishes to post articles or comments. This is necessary to ensure some degree of accountability in the event of misuse and is intended solely to help keep Liberty Post a productive and worthwhile forum for everyone.

Should I use my real name for a "Screen Name" when I register, or make up something?

You do not need to give your real name. You may choose if you prefer, an icon name as do most of our subscribers. Though you may change screen names later if you want, we ask that you choose this name carefully as one you will be happy with for all your future use here at Liberty Post. This will help other people with whom you converse to associate your personality and views with your name, which helps everyone better understand one another.

Do I have to give my real email address when I register?

Yes, you must give your valid email address through which you can be contacted. This not only provides us not only a means of contacting you but also provides some accountability for posts made by our users.

I registered with Liberty Post, and am now an "Introductory Member". What is Introductory Membership?

Introductory Membership is assigned to all new users that register on Liberty Post with a known free web-based email account. For the purposes of Introductory Membership, AOL.com is considered a free web-based email domain account due to AOL nationwide service and policy allowing subscribers to create new email addresses at will. Introductory members enjoy all the benefits of "Full" members except they are slightly limited in how many comments they may make per day. Introductory Membership was instituted as a "security measure" to attempt to discourage unruly persons who are banned or probationed from returning to Liberty Post under a different screen name and resume the irresponsible posting of huge amounts of material. It is not our intent to discourage large amounts of responsible participation on LP on a daily basis (in fact we encourage it). But we are hopeful that introductory membership limitations are actually generous enough for most people to at least get started on Liberty Post, if are not already sufficient for long term use with Liberty Post.

Liberty Post welcomes all those willing to responsibly participate in our forum, including those that choose to utilize a free web-based email address, and we thank you for understanding the reason for this policy.

I would like to post more on Liberty Post than "Introductory Membership" allows. Is there anyway can I upgrade my account to "Full Membership" Status so I can participate more?

Yes! There are four ways you can have your Introductory account upgraded.

  • Provide a confirmed, non-web based and non-free email address to LP operators,
  • Provide some reliable evidence of a sound, responsible posting history (such as proof of a quality posting history via another forum)
  • Have a reputable member of Liberty Post (as judged by LP operators) vouch for you, or
  • Demonstrate a quality interest Liberty Post by participating in this forum over some reasonable period of time (suggested one week to one month).

To upgrade your account, please contact the webmaster at the email address at the bottom of each web page and we'll help you out as soon as possible! Remember, upgrades are not automatic so you must make a request to have your account upgraded.

I don't want to get email spam. Can I trust Liberty Post with my email address?

We don't like spam either. Liberty Post is very anti-spam. We will not send you any spam email at all. You will probably never ever hear from us except when you first register (which is done automatically in order to confirm your address). Apart from that, if you do hear from us, it will be to discuss some problem or issue having to do with you specifically. Your email address will be stored in our database files but will not be displayed on the Liberty Post web site. The only exception to this is if you decide to post it in an article or comment, which we strongly discourage you from doing.

Do I have to enable "cookies" on my browser to use Liberty Post?

A pair of cookies will be set only if you sign in (necessary only to perform a "post" action) and that cookie will expire when you close your web browser. Because of it's short life span, your web browsers will avoid writing that cookie to your hard disk (though that is an issue for whatever browser you use - Liberty Post has no control over that).

Using a cookie in this way allows you to sign in just once and make numerous posts without having to sign in again. If we did not use this cookie system, you would have to sign in with your password every time you posted a comment. If you do not allow this cookie to be set on your system, you will not be able to post any articles or comments.

If you are only here to read articles and comments, you need not sign in and no cookies will be set on your computer.

Would you ever ban people from Liberty Post?

Unfortunately, yes. Unless we intend to impose the ultimate penalty, talk of enforcing any rules to preserve this site as a place to share meaningful ideas is meaningless. If, in the judgment of the operators of Liberty Post you demonstrate gross disregard for civility or the posting standards on this site, we may temporarily or permanently suspend your account. We reserve the right to ban if a poster is deemed to be deliberately defying the posting guidelines or otherwise (in the view of Liberty Post operators) are intentionally bringing harm to this forum whether actually violating a posted guideline or not.

We will give fair warning when appropriate and greatly prefer that it never goes further than that. We thank you for understanding our position.

Who pays to keep the web site up and running?

Liberty Post does not accept any paid advertising. Money is needed to fund labor, hardware and of course, bandwidth. We have no where else to turn except to you for funding to keep Liberty Post on line. We wish we could provide this service at no cost but that is, of course, impossible. If you believe in what Liberty Post is all about, and would like to help us continue, please make a donation. Contributions of any size, large or small, are very helpful and very appreciated.

How can I contribute?

We can always accept donations by credit card, mail, check or money order.

Credit card payments accepted through paypal.com...

or donations may be mailed to:

        Liberty Post
9838 Old Baymeadows Road, PMB 296
        Jacksonville, Florida 32256

NOTE: Due to limitations on banking and check negotiation imposed by the Patriot Act, we must ask that the payee line on check and money order donations be left blank.

What kind of server is powering Liberty Post?

Liberty Post is running on a Linux Apache web server.

What software packages are you using for Liberty Post, and who are the people behind the scenes?

The core application software was completely designed and written in Perl by Neil McIver, by the same screen name. User Interface Design consultant is "Goldi-Lox" (screen name). Others have also made and continue to make various contributions to Liberty Post such as bandwidth, hardware, advice, article contributions, morale support, and not least of all, funding.

Where can I go for information in case Liberty Post goes "off the air" due to some problem or for maintenance?

Liberty Post status messages will be posted at www.freewebs.com/lpstatus to keep our users informed during service outages.

Thank you!
